April 2017 Newsletter

Welcome to spring everyone! In this April Newsletter, we would like to talk about integrative medical care. Integrative medicine reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches to achieve optimal health and healing.

  1. Integrative health and medicine focuses on prevention, high-quality partnerships among clinicians, a collaborative relationship between practitioners and patients/clients, and evidence-based therapies that are not only effective, but tend to improve health. The most common conditions successfully treated are chronic pain, gastrointestinal disorders, depression/anxiety, cancer, and stress. Data from the Bravewell Collaborative demonstrated the efficacy of an integrative approach for reducing pain and anxiety, as well as improving health-related quality of life. Weekly at DSPT, we have various health practitioners and medical professionals (nutritionists, pain management, psychologists, meditation) come in to educate us on how their services/skills can be used to better our clients' needs.
  2. Acetabular hip labral tears can be a frequent cause of anterior hip/groin pain in both men and women. Patients' with labral tear diagnosis may go unrecognized because the clinical presentation of labral tears varies, especially once secondary changes occur in associated structures. In our clinical practice at DSPT, we investigate the contribution of pelvic floor dysfunction to acetabular labral tears, or vice versa, as each problem has to be addressed for the referring diagnoses to be treated completely and effectively.
  3. Once exclusively considered an Eastern practice, acupuncture is now commonly incorporated into integrative health care, and considered a valuable complementary and alternative modality in the West. Here at DSPT, our staff acupuncturist Mila is experienced and well versed in coordinating care with physical therapy for hip, shoulder, neck/back, concussion pathologies. Notably, Mila works in concert with MDs and PTs from the HSS Concussion team to help clients get back to sport and life.

All of us here at DSPT pride ourselves in working closely together as a team to offer our clients every opportunity and avenue to heal, feel their best and get back to their active lives. We are unique as a team and practice in providing different perspectives on the healing process due to our specialties: ART/Graston, Vestibular/Concussion, Schroth/Scoliosis, Male & Female Pelvic Floor, Acupuncture, Postural Restoration (PRI), Pre & Postpartum, Hip/Shoulder Joint Pathologies. Give us a call to see what we can do for you!
